MARVEL COMICS
"The 'NAM"
Issue #23, October 1988

In the 1980s, Marvel Comics, publishers of great superhero comic books such as Spider-Man, The Hulk and The X-Men, had a wonderful war comic book called "The 'Nam." Early issues of this title were drawn by fan favorite artist Michael Golden (through the issue featuring me was not).

The stories in this comic were different. They were written by actual Vietnam veterans, and the book chronicled several years of the war in a realistic manner. No superheroes here, just ordinary men and women -- soldiers. I was thrilled when Marvel called and asked me if I would allow them to portray me in a special issue of "The 'Nam." I said yes, of course!

Vietnam vet Doug Murray wrote me into a lovely story that was printed in “The 'Nam,” #23, October 1988; Story by Doug Murray; Pencils by Wayne Vasant; Inks by Frank Springer; Colors by Mark Chiarello

Titled "Blue Christmas," the story is about a soldier who feels lonely and rejected on Christmas Eve, and tells how my visit cheered him up. Although the details are fictional, the event is something that really happened to me many times when I traveled to Vietnam to entertain our troops. -- Love, Chris Noel
